Vicenta's Story

Vicenta is one of our graduates and participants of U4C Empowerment Program.  She has become a role model and inspiration for the team and so many women.  Here is her story:

My name is Vicenta Marca. I am 39 years old. My husband died 3 years ago. Since then, I’ve been taking care of my 3 children and my father. I attended up to 7th grade only. Because I had never have the opportunity to finish school, I make sure my kids go to school and avoid working at the mines. Although one of my boys works as a mechanic, the other two are still in school. My boy is a junior in college and my daughter is in middle school.

Life hasn’t been easy for Vicenta.  That is why she decided to send her kids to La Paz city to live with some relatives.

I currently work in Caracoles as a bricklayer’s assistant. My income is very low, but at least I have something to eat and pay for my medical check ups.  The doctor said I have liver problems, anemia and high blood pressure. That is why, I am very grateful for the education and entrepreneurship program with U4C. It makes me happy because it’s helping me to catch up with my education…although it’s difficult, I am learning again how to read and write. I feel confident I will be able to find a better job at the mines.

Today Vicenta is part of the Microenterprise Caracoles, the first one created by graduates.

I am hoping to open my own shop in the future and make more money, so my kids can go to a good University. I really want to live a longer and fruitful life.
