In the slums of Nyalenda, Kisumu, lives Sharon Akinyi, an 18-year-old mother of three with a story of heartbreak, resilience, and hope. Orphaned at two and raised by her elderly grandmother, Sharon faced a life of poverty that forced her into child labor. At just 12, she became a mother to twins in a tragic turn of events born out of desperation.
After the death of her grandmother, Sharon moved to the city in search of a better life. Instead, she faced homelessness, abuse, and unimaginable loss, including the disappearance of her youngest child. With little support and living with HIV, Sharon’s determination to survive for her children never wavered.
Her journey took a transformative turn with the support of the Women’s Action for Progress and Change (WAPC) and United4Change Center (U4C). Through these programs, Sharon received counseling, skill training, food support, and empowerment workshops. Weekly group therapy and one-on-one counseling sessions helped her rediscover her self-worth and heal from the trauma of her past. Mentorship programs focused on self-esteem and forgiveness have given Sharon the strength to share her story openly, breaking free from stigma and inspiring others.
Today, Sharon is determined to turn her challenges into opportunities. Her dream is to start a small business that will provide stability for her family. “I want to give my children the life I never had,” she says. Her ultimate goal is to send her children to school, provide them with consistent meals, and ensure they never experience the hardships she endured.
Sharon’s story is a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit. Despite unimaginable challenges, she has found the courage to heal, rebuild, and dream of a brighter future. Her resilience and determination to provide a better life for her children remind us of the incredible impact that hope and opportunity can have. Sharon’s journey inspires us all to believe in the possibility of change and the power of unwavering perseverance.
