Dorcas was a police officer in Kisumu, Kenya. She served her community in uniform for years. Then, when that chapter ended, she faced the question so many women face alone: what now?
If this were most stories, this would be the part where everything falls apart.
Instead, it is the middle. Because a community was already there.
Through training and support from United4Change Center and Women Arise for Positive Change (WAPC Kenya) in Kisumu, Dorcas rebuilt. Today, she leads trainings that reach hundreds of people every year. In turn, women who learn from her go home and teach their daughters, their neighbors, and their savings groups. One woman’s turning point became a community’s momentum.
We have a name for what happened next. We call it a ripple.
What 14 years taught us
United4Change Center was founded on a simple belief: when a woman is free to learn, live, and prosper, everyone around her rises with her. For 14 years, we have watched that belief prove itself in communities around the world. The research is consistent, and the evidence is clear: when women earn, families and communities gain. Studies across Latin America and Africa show that income in women’s hands becomes investment in children, food, health, and education. In other words, it multiplies.
We have watched it happen in our own programs, too. When a woman in our entrepreneurship cohorts begins to earn, the first things she buys are often school supplies, medicine, and better meals. As a result, her business becomes her family’s safety net and her community’s engine. Fathers, sons, and neighbors gain alongside her because, when a woman rises, she brings her whole community with her.
More than anything, we have watched it in lives. A woman starts a small business and hires three neighbors. A mother gains financial independence, and her children stay in school. A graduate of a program turns around and becomes a mentor. Meanwhile, a community organizes around clean water because one woman refused to wait. Economic ripples. Family ripples. Leadership ripples. Why we are launching the Ripple of Change
This month, we are launching the Ripple of Change, our campaign built on everything those years have taught us.
The Ripple of Change is not a fundraiser with a deadline. Instead, it is a way of seeing and an invitation to take your place in a story that is already moving. Because here is the truth behind every statistic we publish: behind every gift is a woman. A name, a story, a family, a community, a future.
Dorcas is why we do this work. So are María, Lucía, Sofía, Brenda, and thousands of women whose names you will meet in the months ahead.
